Platforms do not develop governance gaps in unique ways. They develop them in predictable ones. Six patterns appear consistently across organisations, industries, and platform programmes. Together they form FRACTS.
The Six Patterns
Fragile Ownership — A solution becomes business-critical. Its builder moves to another role. Nobody documented how it works, what it connects to, or who is responsible for it. The solution continues running until it stops.
Risky Integrations — Connectors are enabled and data begins flowing between systems through paths that were never mapped, never classified, and never reviewed. The integration works. Its governance footprint is invisible.
Ambiguous Dependencies — A flow depends on a credential, an environment variable, or an API endpoint that was set up informally and never documented. When something in the dependency changes, the flow stops — and the root cause takes time to find.
Cost Blindness — Licence and usage costs accumulate across the tenant in ways that were not projected. Premium connectors in use by unlicensed makers. Capacity consumption growing beyond baseline. The bill arrives before the model was built to anticipate it.
Tribal Knowledge — Capability and context live in individuals rather than in documentation. When those individuals move on, the knowledge moves with them.
Scaling Limits — Early architectural decisions — environment structure, data model choices, connector strategy — become constraints when the platform grows beyond what those decisions were designed to support.
